Donatello (Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles - Classic Cartoon) Review
Donatello
Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles - Classic Cartoon (Neca)In every adaptation of TMNT, Donatello serves as the inventor of the group, just like how Leo's the leader, Raph's the tough guy, and Mikey's the fun-loving one. In the 2012 series, he was nerdier than previous versions, but he and his brothers all shared the same love for old cartoons, video games, comic books… the usual stuff teenagers and nerds like. Plus, he was voiced by Rob Paulsen, the voice of Raphael from the original cartoon (inevitably leading to a same-voice joke when both generations of Turtles met). Although he's number #1 in NECA's 2012 line, he's the fourth figure I got, and the third I'll be reviewing.

Again, May Thamtarana sculpted these versions of the turtles, and Donatello looks just as good as Leo and Mikey. His default portrait is a serious one, with blank white eyes and a closed mouth as opposed to the more open ones his brothers have. The eyes could've been painted better, but everything else about it is great. His alternate head gives him a happier expression that befits his personality, with his eyes and mouth wide open, showing the gap in his teeth. I don't like how the eyes are handled on this portrait, as the mismatched sizes make him look goofy, but it could be art style-accurate as far as I'm aware. There's a bit of bleed with the mask on this head, but everything else is clean.

At 6" tall, Donatello is the tallest of his brothers, with pistachio-colored skin, greenish wraps on his forearms, and brownish-gray ones on his ankles. The body sculpt is accurate all over, with a slightly rough texture for his ankle wraps, and softer plastic for his plastron and belt so they don't interfere with movement. His belt has a strap crossing his torso, and a bo holster on the back. The holster is separate from him in the package, and it takes a bit of work to plug it in due to the soft plastic. The paint is very clean, with almost no bleed, though I don't understand why they couldn't fully paint the wraps on the gripping hands. I guess they were worried about it chipping off when you slide the accessories into them?

The articulation is the same as the previous two I reviewed, but to reiterate, Donnie has a barbell head and chest, swivel/hinge shoulders, wrists, and ankles, ball hips, double-hinged elbows and knees, and swivel biceps, thighs, and mask tassels. Everything moves easily, and the heads and hands were easy to swap. Accessories are also somewhat the same as he has the smoke bomb, communicator, and pizza slice the other turtles have, as well as pairs of gripping, open, and pointing hands. 2012 Don's bo staff is unique as it has a hidden naginata blade inside of it, making it just as good for 'bot slashing as Leo's katanas, and the different ends with this staff swap with no issues. As an inventor, Donnie comes with a pair of goggles that fits just fine over either head, and a tracking device constructed out of a Game Boy and egg beaters. Lastly, he has Dr. Cluckingsworth, the mutated chicken from his time on the O'Neil farm. The sculpt and paint on her are both great, but the feet on mine are a little crooked, making it tricky for her to stand.

It's hard for me to choose a favorite out of the 2012 Turtles, but if I had to, I'd say Mikey, with Donnie at a close second. Aside from an off-looking alternate head, he's probably my favorite of the four NECA bros so far (I don't have Raph yet), thanks to the fun accessories, and we'll be getting a good deal more with the "Harmony" SDCC four-pack that's gone up for pre-order twice by now. Plus, we're getting Metalhead, who can be pre-ordered now, and he'll go great with his creator.
