Tanookie Mario (Super Leaf) (Super Mario Bros. - Movie (Jakks Pacific)) Review
Tanookie Mario (Super Leaf)
Super Mario Bros. - Movie (Jakks Pacific) (Jakks Pacific)With how much of a success Illumination's Super Mario Bros. movie turned out to be, it's not much of a surprise that a sequel is coming. Said sequel, The Super Mario Galaxy Movie, looks great, and it won't be too long before it drops, so I'll definitely be seeing it. With Jakks Pacific putting out merch for said movie, I may as well go back and review the second wave of first movie figures. Just a heads up, it's pretty variant-heavy.

There are two Marios in this wave, one of whom is wearing the Tanooki suit, which first appeared in Super Mario Bros. 3, and made an appearance late in the film. He's dressed in a raccoon-like suit with shades of orange, yellow, and brown, though he still has his white gloves, and the brim of his hat sticks out in the hood (appearing like such from 3D Land onwards). He stands 5 1/4" tall, a bit over the regular Mario because of the ears, and the detail on the costume is great, with a fur-like texture for a bit more realism. The paint could be better, though, as there are a few areas of bleed and slop, but it's minor for the most part. The likeness is similar to the first wave Mario, but the face is a little smaller due to the hood, most notably the mustache, and there's no sculpted mouth at all here.

The articulation is a little lessened from the regular Mario, but it's still a bit more than the basic game line. Tanooki Mario has a ball-jointed head and waist, swivel/hinge shoulders, swivel/hinge/swivel elbows, swivel wrists and tail, ball hips, and hinged knees and ankles. The head and chest have little to no tilt, which is a shame, but the arms and legs work just fine. The legs would've benefitted from thigh cuts like the basic Mario, and they could've designed the knees and ankles better to avoid gapping. His accessory is a Tanooki leaf, which can be held in his right hand thanks to the slight bend in the fingers.

The other Mario in the wave is his Cat Suit, which debuted in 3D World, and is more recognizable from the film as it appeared during his fight with Donkey Kong (speaking of which, how come we never got a movie DK figure?). He stands the same height as Tanooki Mario, and has the same articulation, but his head is much more useful. His suit is yellow and white all over, with a few orange accents and pink ear interiors, and there are fewer paint issues than the other Mario. His hood is smaller, though the face is the same size, and he also has huge, paw-like gloves, which unfortunately aren't designed to hold anything. He still gets an accessory, though, and it's a huge question mark block. Given these figures are a slightly larger scale than what Jakks usually does for their video game lines, it makes sense it would be big.

The last variant in the wave is of Peach, being dressed in her motorbike outfit from the Rainbow Road scene. The face looks better than the base version from the first wave, though there is a lot of bleed from the hair strand on the left cheek. Her helmet is molded from a harder plastic over the rest of the head, with very clean work on the pink accents, and a clear orange visor over her eyes. Aside from the aforementioned hair bleed, the rest of the face paint is clean, with the eyes being painted on rather than the "realistic" clear eyes the first wave Peach had. I prefer the painted eyes anyways, as the realistic eyes from the first wave and the Marios in this wave looked like they were following you around, like a cursed painting, and it was kinda creepy.

Peach stands 5 1/2" tall, and while a little shorter than her regular version due to the lack of a crown, she's still around the same height. She's dressed in a white and pink biker outfit, with what appears to be a neckerchief over her brooch from her standard outfit. The outfit is pretty skin-tight, though with a few wrinkles here and there, and the paint about as clean as you can get with a mass-produced figure, with some bleed here and there, and the pink plastic seeping through the white paint on the very tops of the forearms and lower legs. Her articulation is a huge step up from the first wave Peach thanks to freed-up legs, with a ball-jointed head, swivel/hinge shoulders and elbows, swivel wrists, waist, and thighs, ball hips, hinged knees, and swivel/hinge ankles. I would've liked if the ankle had rocker swivels, but everything else is good, though she's more prone to falling over than the others. Her accessory is the Blue Shell, the bane of Mario Kart players everywhere, and something that makes sense with her if you've seen the film.

The last figure in the wave is a bad guy, and it's Kamek, Bowser's second-in-command. His design hasn't changed much over the years, and the Magikoopa appears as he usually does, with his blue robe and wizard hat, blank glasses, and little fangs poking out his turtle-like face. He's smaller than the others at 4 1/2" tall, though he's still a bit on the oversized side, but you know how Jakks is with their odd scaling. That said, the sculpt is simple but great, being accurate to how he looks in the film, and the outfit has a subtle burlap texture. While his torso is a solid piece due to the robe, they at least sculpted the soles of his feet on the bottom. The colors are also simple, as he's mostly blue, yellow, and white, but bleed and fuzzy edges are a big issue with him. He also suffers from limited articulation, with only a ball-jointed head, swivel/hinge shoulders, hinged elbows, and swivel wrists, and there's not a lot of poses he can pull off. At least he gets his wand to hold.

The second movie wave is a little weaker than the first, mainly because of the paint issues and how variant-heavy it is, but these are still fun, and you might have a good chance of finding these for below retail (I only paid $3 for Peach, believe it or not, thanks to super low Walmart clearance). I already got two of the sequel figures Jakks did, and they're great in hand, and I have a good feeling they're going to top their work on these.
