The arc also introduced Karai, the female Foot member who would become a regular throughout the franchise. NECA did a figure of her before, but as she appeared in The Last Ronin, and now we have the original Karai as she appeared in the Mirage era. Sculpted by May Thamtarana (who did a few Foot-related figures before), Karai's design adheres to Jim Lawson's style well, and the portrait seems to be based off a specific panel ("Gaze upon the face of vengeance…"). She's beyond ticked, with somewhat messy hair and thick lashes, and the paint on the face is very clean. You can swap the head out for one donning Shredder's helmet, with blank eyes showing through the slot, and yes, this is a new sculpt different from what Four Horsemen did years ago. There's a second helmet that's mostly the same mold, but isn't designed to be swapped onto the neck, hence the lack of eyes. It's just meant to be held, and the shading and scuffs on it are painted differently, but both helmets have a nice metallic finish. At about 6 1/2" tall, Karai is dressed the same way as Shredder, as part of her efforts to put an end to the Foot Elite's tyranny. Since NECA no longer has to use IDW's colorations of the Mirage comics, Karai is dressed in a bold crimson outfit, with various pieces of armor. In addition to the curved blades, the armor bits all have the same metallic finish the helmets do, and I think we can all agree that metallic paint can make any part of a figure cooler. She has a slender build with some muscles, particularly in the upper legs, and the painted lines bring out the creases and wrinkles in the outfit well. With all this talk about paint, I can happily confirm the work is very clean, and what few areas of bleed she has are barely noticeable. Karai has plenty of articulation, and it's some of the best out of this line so far. She has a barbell head and chest, swivel/hinge shoulders, wrists, and ankles, ball-jointed hips and waist, double-hinged elbows and knees, and swivel biceps, forearms, and thighs. I had no idea the forearms moved at first, and it helps for more natural-looking arm poses, and everything else moves great. Shin swivels would've been good for her, and it's a bit of a shame she doesn't have pinless joints, but she poses well nonetheless. Aside from the two helmets, Karai also gets three pairs of hands (closed, gripping, and relaxed), a bladed staff, a sword, and a pair of butterfly swords with spiked guards. The gripping hands being vertically-hinged really helps with weapon poses, and it's something NECA needs to do more often with Mirage figures. NECA wasn't the first to do a Mirage Karai action figure, as Super7 beat them to it. Everyone knew NECA would do her eventually, and now there's a "mercenary" version coming soon that further kills the need for S7's. Aside from a few improvements I would've liked regarding articulation, Shredder Karai is great, and will make a fun addition to your Foot Clan. - 9/25/25 by Toasted Brains![]() |
