Triceraton (Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles (Super7)) Review
Triceraton
Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles (Super7) (Super7)Super7's been doing great with TMNT, especially now they're giving the 2003 cartoon the action figures it deserves. However, the main reason for that is because Playmates allegedly told them to stop or at least dial back on reusing their old toy designs. I think it's because Playmates has been big into reissuing older figures (including rarer and deep-cut stuff like Scale-Tail and the Pizza Tossin' Turtles), and they're worried fans will prefer S7's updated but pricier takes on them. At least Super7 was able to do one of my most-wanted figures, the Triceraton, before things got complicated.

Like usual, Four Horsemen's been doing a great job recreating decades-old designs, and the Triceraton doesn't look too much different from before. He bears the same pissed-off expression as the original figure, and the skin isn't as bumpy, but there's still a bit of a rough texture. His frill is a bit more spaced out, likely to make it look nicer in a larger scale. The paint is good, save for some slop here and there, and the teeth aren't white like before, but rather a dirtier color. Clearly he hasn't had the time to brush.

Wave 7 must've been the wave of the big guys, as this devious dinosaur stands a bit over 8" tall. Sculpt-wise, the body is not different, save for his skin being made less bumpy in favor of a rougher texture as mentioned above. The colors are what's really different, as he's a bit darker than the original figure, and the pants are a dark green rather than the bluish-green of before. The underside of his tail went from gray to blue, making it look a bit more vibrant. His belt is more colorful than the solid gray of before, and the two rats tied to his belt have a nicer look, with a more realistic texture and little "X" eyes. There's some slop and bleed here and there with the paint, but it's no worse than usual for the line. Also be careful when handling him, because those spikes on the forearm armor hurt.

The Triceraton has all the usual articulation and then some, with a barbell head, swivel/hinge shoulders, elbows, wrists, hips, knees, and ankles, swivel biceps, thighs, and calves, and ball-jointed waist and tail. It sounds like he moves well enough, but his bulky frame hinders his movement quite a bit. His head has little tilt due to his thick neck, and the elbows are just as restricted hinge-wise, being only able to achieve 45 degrees at most due to his beefy arms and forearm accessories. Said arms also result in his biceps being very hard to move, so it's a good thing the elbows turn. The legs are fine save for his right calf being loose, though the green joints in the knees clash with the skin exposed through the tears in the pants. I get joints won't always blend in perfectly, but Super7 could've tried a little harder.

One thing the Triceraton does well is accessories, as there's a good selection of weapons and equipment for him. The three standard pairs of hands are included - gripping, closed, and grasping - and they swap with no issues. The Neutron Neutralizer and Laser Phaser return, bearing a more colorful look and a metallic finish, alongside the removable utility belt. Speaking of the belt, some of the stuff on it has been made into their own accessories, with a pair of grenades and a dead rat for him to chow down on. Then there's the really new stuff, such as the laser-like arm blade. It clips onto his left forearm, and it looks great. There's also a communicator for the right forearm, and while it's tough to clip on, it's a nice extra, and it can flip open and close. Lastly, there's a breathing mask that fits on his head with some effort, and an oxygen provider that hangs onto the belt. Since Earth's different atmosphere can make a Triceraton a little loopy, this guy was smart to provide some of his own air.

Imperfect paint and restricted articulation aside, the Triceraton is a good upgrade over the original toy, and one I'm glad to see in the line, even though it took more than two years for him to be announced, and then over two more years for him to actually be released. Thankfully, I held off a bit longer on getting him because I was able to get him for half-price, which is the best way to get Super7 figures.
