Sla'Ker Turtles of Grayskull (Mattel)The Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles have crossed over with many other properties over the years, from Star Trek to Ghostbusters, from Batman to Power Rangers, and even Cobra Kai. One of the latest crossovers is a toyline started by Mattel last year: "Turtles of Grayskull." As you can guess from the name, the Ninja Turtles, along with their allies and enemies, are dropped into the world of Eternia, fighting alongside or against He-Man and co. I haven't seen the figures too often, and wasn't really that interested in them at first, but when I saw Sla'ker, the line's take on one of my favorite TMNT characters, I was all for him. It certainly helps he was on clearance. These figures usually come on cardbacks, but these deluxe releases are packaged in window boxes instead. The graphics are fitting to the MOTU license, but with TMNT-inspired elements, such as pipes and ooze, and the character artwork all over looks stunning. You'll have to snip some tape and ties to get everything out, but aside from that it's all collector-friendly. The inside also gives you a thick, cardboard character card with more artwork, as opposed to the little comics the basic figures have. Still a nice extra to have, though. Sla'ker's backstory is that Faker, He-Man's evil robotic doppelganger, got covered with same mutagen responsible for Slash's creation, turning him into another Slash. Somehow. The design here is based off the original Slash figure (the best design for him), though the light blue skin to more similar to Faker. The expression chosen for him is nice, with a wicked grin showing off his unhealthy teeth, and the sculpt is fine as long as you don't mind the obvious seam line on the lower jaw. As Faker is a robot, his mutated form's yellow left eye has a cybernetic appearance, with some of the underlying metal being exposed around it. It's hard to notice it at first due to the lack of paint there, but everything else is cleanly painted, and the colors look great. At 7" tall, Sla'ker towers a bit over the majority of the line, and while I would like it if he was bulkier to befit how Slash usually looks, I assume the proportions were kept more in-line with Faker and the rest of the Eternia denizens. His outfit is unchanged from Faker's original form, with the golden chest armor, wristcuffs, boots, and loincloth over his purple speedo, a few more Slash-like elements are here, such as the purple S-belt, spiked shoulder pads, and of course, a big shell. Most of the clothes can be removed from the figure, in case you feel like stripping him down a bit. Almost all of the colors are just what the plastic is molded in, but with a slightly metallic look, since he's a robot. There's some paint on the belt/loincloth, however, and the chest has printed gauges and cybernetics under the armor, including what I assume are pizza meters. Wonder how long it'll be before he needs some more. The articulation for these figures seems to be the same as the MOTU Origins line, and offers some pretty good movement. Sla'ker has a barbell head, swivel/hinge shoulders, elbows, wrists, knees, and ankles, ball-jointed hips, and swivel waist, shins, and mask knot. I said some of the clothes/armor was removable, but you have to pop him apart to do so. Good news is that these figures were designed with mixing and matching in mind, and he can pop apart at the head, shoulders, wrists, waist, and shins; which can create some unique combinations with other figures. The joints move fine, and the shoulders seem to be pegged in at an angle, allowing the arms to go a bit more in front of the torso. The ankles aren't tooled with any rocker motion, meaning you'll have to turn the shin in the direction you want the hinge to go for deeper stances. Sla'ker doesn't have much when it comes to accessories, but he does have a pair of blades with big spikes on the handles. They remind me a bit of the knife the original Slash figure had, and the design of them is very unique, and make for deadly weapons in his hands, but one of them has a big mark near the end of the blade. Although the carapace is a part of the figure, I'm counting it as an accessory because it's both removable and has a handle on the inside, allowing Sla'ker to use it as a shield. That's not all with him, as these Target-exclusive releases also come with parts to build a Metal-Boto figure, a combination of Metalhead and Roboto, and Sla'ker in particular has his head, pelvis, and most of his legs. I've managed to get 3/4ths of the way there to completing him, and now I just need to wait for that Bopsteady to come out to finish the other robot in the line. I wasn't expecting to get any of these Turtles of Grayskull, but Sla'ker changed that as he proved to be an enjoyable figure, and I've since gotten a few more. I'll probably be sticking to just TMNT characters for this line, since I'm not into MOTU, but I'd be willing to grab a few of those ones for the sake of world-building. Hopefully they won't be too hard or too pricey to get ahold of. - 8/12/24 ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() |
