Bluegrass SilverHawks (Super7) (Super7)Sure, he may be partly metal, partly real, but Bluegrass still acts like a man from a much earlier time. A cowboy who seemingly traveled into the future, he doesn't need fancy cybernetic wings or shoulder lasers; all he needs is his lasso and a guitar. A guitar that shoots lasers. Bluegrass, like the other figures in this line, has a very accurate head sculpt. Four Horsemen was involved in the sculpting of these, but neither they nor Super7 bothered to credit who actually did this guy. He has his cowboy hat on, and it can be removed to reveal a mohawk underneath. Makes you wonder if he had one to begin with or if it was just part of the armor. He comes with three head sculpts: one neutral, one smirking, and one winking/grinning. They look great and swap easily, with very clean work on the eyes (there doesn't seem to be any face printing like Steelwill got), but the edges where the skin meets the metal could be cleaner. At about 6 3/4" tall without the hat, Bluegrass has a more average, slender build compared to Quicksilver and Steelwill, and aside from the face and right arm from below the bicep, is solid blue. Unlike Steelwill, the color is accurate to the show, and even though it looks like unpainted blue plastic, the finish is good, and there seems to be some wash to bring out the look a bit. The skin on the arm is painted, but the hands aren't, creating a barely noticeable bit of contrast between them. The red neckerchief is removable, in case you want him to be as naked as the others. Guess there's no real need for clothes when your private areas are encased in metal. The other notable thing about his design is that the armor on his lower legs is designed to resemble cowboy boots, with little silver lines at the top of them. Said lines could look much nicer, though. The articulation is the usual here, with our space cowboy getting a barbell head, swivel/hinge shoulders, elbows, wrists, hips, knees, and ankles, swivel biceps, waist, thighs, and calves, and a ball chest. Also as per usual, the chest is useless, being unable to tilt or even turn. Come on, S7, either make the chest move plenty or don't have it move at all; not somewhere in between. Most of the joints work great, but the shoulders are pretty tight, and I saw them getting a little damaged from movement. At least the arm joints work well enough for plenty of poses, as do the legs, and the head can roll around well on the joint. If there's one thing Super7 does right with this line, it's accessories, and Bluegrass is loaded with them. A lot of hands are included, with five different pairs - relaxed, gripping, closed, guitar playing, and thumbs up - and three extra right hands - one saluting, one holding (at least supposed to be holding) a guitar pick, and one for holding the hat. They swap easily, and can create plenty of poses. His signature guitar, Hot Licks is included, complete with strap (the longer strap goes with this one), and the paint is pretty good, especially on the strings. There's two effects that can be used with it, one a generic laser, and the other a music notes effect. You'll have to force them into the front, but they look great on it, and won't weigh anything down. Hot Licks isn't Bluegrass' only friend, as he also comes with his hawk buddy Sideman. Sideman comes in three different sculpts: one perched, one flying, and one in guitar mode. All of them look great, and the ones with claws can rest on the arm fine, but there's no movement to any of them (not even a neck swivel), and the effects can't be used with the guitar mode. Again, they at least look nice. There's also his lasso, or lassos, with one curled up and the other designed to wrangle foes. The loop on the longer one can rotate, and even though the way it's sculpted and comes in the tray means it's not good for one-handed lassoing, but the plastic isn't too hard on it, so it can be deformed a bit for better poses. Bluegrass is definitely the best hawk I've gotten from the line so far (Steelwill would've been, but see my review for what went wrong with him), though a couple things could've been better. Better paint, better chest movement, articulation on Sideman… But aside from all that, Super7 actually put in a lot of effort with him, and I look forward to the eventual vac-metal Kenner tribute version. - 6/13/24 ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() |
