Shredder (Battle Damaged) Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles - Mirage Comics (Neca)The Mirage version of Shredder has had quite a history with NECA. Initially shelved due to Playmates' refusal to share the TMNT license, he saw release in 2016 as part of a con-exclusive set, and then received a new version released as part of the Lootcrate series, and then that one was repainted for that AutoT thing Walmart's doing. Now, he's finally got a widespread release, and it's more than just a repaint! Much of the figure is recycled from the initial sculpt by Four Horsemen Studios, including the helmet. The paint work on it is very similar to the Lootcrate Shredder, with the black "shine." The exposed skin through the mask is pitch black, with blank white eyes, adding another layer of menace to the Foot Clan leader. This version of him gets a second portrait, which swaps at the neck instead of the head. This portrait is the unmasked Oroku Saki, with blood running down his face and a nasty grimace. Most of his neck is exposed here, and it's a little thicker compared to the helmeted portrait. Not sure why, it just is. Standing 6 3/4" tall, much of Shredder's sculpt is the same as what we've seen before, but the torso and thighs are resculpted with tears in the clothing and exposed bloody scratches. The new tooling was done by Josh Sutton, while the original sculptors, Four Horsemen, get no credit here for some reason. I'm not sure if it's just an issue with mine, but I saw one of the spikes on the right shoulder pad was missing, which does throw things off a bit. As opposed to the red and brown color scheme the original figure had, this one is predominately blue with black highlights, much like the Lootcrate figure. The paint is also very clean, which is a big plus. The articulation is mostly unchanged from the old mold, with slight differences. The head uses the old type of barbell joint with a peg in the head and a ball in the neck, and the masked head works better due to the thinner neck. There's also a very useful swivel/hinge joint at the base of the neck, which aids in more dynamic poses. The arms get swivel/hinge shoulders and wrists, swivel biceps, and double-hinged elbows, and they work nice, but the shoulders are rather tight, and can't go out all the way. There's no joints on the torso aside from a swivel waist, and below that are ball-jointed hips, swivel thighs and shins, double-hinged knees, swivel/hinge ankles, and toe hinges. I like the better hips and ankles, but I wish they redid the shoulders to move better. The neck, biceps, and wrists were also stuck out of the box, so make sure to heat up and/or freeze if necessary. Despite the fact that Shredder is slightly above average price ($37 as opposed to $33-35), he's pretty on accessories, but it's no surprise given that this is a one-issue look. The unmasked portrait is a very nice inclusion, and the two looks swap easily. In addition to fists, Shredder gets three different pairs of gripping hands, although there's not much for him to hold. There are two key items corresponding to his appearance in the first issue: a thermite grenade and a damaged piece of armor. If you have the old 2008 Mirage Turtle figures, that armor piece, along with this figure as a whole, will go great with them. It's nice to get a new Mirage Shredder that's more than just a mere repaint, and the easy availability helps, even if he's Target-exclusive for the time being. That said, I would love it if NECA could do another version of this mold with the same colors as the first Shredder, just so he can be incorporated better with the older figures. Not sure if that'll happen or how they'll release it if it does, but finding another one shouldn't be too hard, so a custom repaint is possible. - 7/9/23 ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() |
