Ultimate Shredder Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles - 1990 Movie (Neca)As much as love NECA's movie Turtles (but not as much as the toon line), some of my more desired releases were impossible to find. That April/Casey two-pack I reviewed not too long ago? I never saw it in-store, and it took me until this earlier this month to get it from a toy seller for cheap. Secret of the Ooze Shredder proved impossible to find as well, until recently, where I finally found him at Walmart. The box was pretty beat up, but hey, better than nothing. The graphic on the front of the box is simple but effective. The shot of Shredder obscured by shadows serves to remind us that he's a force to be reckoned with, and the rest of the box has some nice shots of the figure. There's also only one plastic tie holding in the figure, thank God! In Secret of the Ooze, Shredder was played by François Chau instead of James Saito, and great attention to detail was paid here. Jason Frailey and Trevor Zammit provided the sculpt here, and it looks nice all around, but the face is what matters most, with cuts all over and a vile grimace. Of course, you'd be pretty ticked off too if you were crushed in a trash compactor. The helmet is different as well, with serrated edges and gold accents. It's nice and sharp, but be mindful of the spikes; three of them were broken off in the package. And yes, the mask is removable like the first movie Shredder. Speaking of which, much of the figure seems to have been reused from the first Shredder figure. The only new tooling aside from the head seems to be the upper body and left hand(s). The belt looks the same as before, but is now separate from the upper body. Standing around 7 1/2” up to the top of his helmet, Oroku Saki has some very nice paint and texture, with his clothes being a bold, toon-inspired purple instead of red like before. The pattern on his tailored cape is nice, but there's no bendy wire running through it this time, which is a shame; that always makes toy capes cooler. The articulation isn't too much different from the first Shredder, with minor changes. Saki gets a ball-jointed head, neck, and waist, swivel/hinge shoulders, wrists, hips, upper knees, and ankles, double-swivel/hinge elbows, swivel thighs, and hinged lower knees. The belt being separate from the upper torso allows for nicer motion in the waist, but the collar being sculpted onto the torso rather than a separate piece seems to restrict the neck a bit. All of the joints move well, but I wish the ratcheting swivel/hinge hips were swapped out for ball/socket joints, since those move much more fluidly. Shredder comes equipped with some nice accessories, allowing for a handful of display options. There are three pairs of interchangeable hands - closed, gripped, and style pose - that swap easily, and the spiked forearm guards can be slid off. He gets a sword that fits into a scabbard, and that can be held onto the figure with a stretchy fabric belt. There's also a funky spear that looks awesome, and the arm articulation allows for great poses with it. The TGRI canister is here once more, and also included with the figure are a vial of ooze and a bunch of dandelions. I like the dandelions in particular, thanks to great paint wash and detail. While a few improvements in articulation could have been made, Shredder is a very solid figure with plenty to offer, even if you'll have to travel hell or high water to get him. With Keno coming soon, I'm hoping NECA continues to add to the SOTO cast with April, Shredder, Professor Perry, and maybe even Vanilla Ice.
