Casey Jones / April O'Neil (Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles - 1990 Movie) Review
Casey Jones / April O'Neil
Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles - 1990 Movie (Neca)As we all know, NECA's been doing Secret of the Ooze figures for a while now, and has put out a couple awesome figures, but the first Turtle movie still has some material left in it, such as this two-pack of April O'Neil and Casey Jones from when our heroes had to retreat to the countryside following a Foot clan attack. The only other first movie figure confirmed right now is an original idea: April in a yellow jumpsuit with an in-scale arcade cabinet. I love creative ideas and all, but there's still other characters that can be taken from the film. Charles Pennington, Chief Sterns, a better version of Danny, Sam Rockwell, Tatsu (if his actor's okay with it)… but I'm not here to talk about what could happen.

This set has a whopping four sculptors credited behind it: Adrienne Smith, Trevor Grove, Trevor Zammit, and Kyle Windrix. I appreciate NECA crediting their sculptors, but would it kill them to specify who sculpted what? Anyways, Casey dressed differently on the farm, with lighter pants, no gloves, and a white tank top, or "wife beater" as they're called. The only new tooling here are the upper arms, hands and torso; everything else is recycled from the other movie Casey. The heads aren't too much different aside from a tanner skin tone and a few slight adjustments to the masked head. Although most of the torso is covered up by the tank top, you can see some chest hair through the top, with paint helping to bring it out. Casey stands 7 1/4" tall, and is covered head to toe with very clean paint.

Then we have April, who dressed up in a knotted shirt, a black skirt, and black high heels. She has the same head options as the earlier Ultimate, one neutral and one smiling, but the hair is completely different on both. Other than the bare heads, the only reuse here are the hands and feet. Standing 7" tall, April is nicely done, but I have a few nits with her appearance. The paint on the pupils isn't as good as the first April, and there is some bleed around the sleeves and shoes. Still, the pattern on her shirt looks great, and I feel that the hair color here is better than before, thanks to it not being too dark in some areas.

Both figures move about the same, with only one area of difference. April and Casey both get a ball-jointed head, chest, and waist, swivel/hinge shoulders, elbows, wrists, knees, and ankles, and swivel thighs. The type of joint used for the hips is different on both; Casey has the same ratcheting swivel/hinge hips as the first figure, while April gets ball/socket hips. Unfortunately, April's hips are held back by the skirt, and I wish that was done with cloth instead of soft plastic. Still, both figures can manage some nice poses, and the single-jointed knees on April look far better than whatever was going on with the single release.

Moving onto accessories, both figures each get an alternate head as mentioned before, and they swap easily. Casey gets three pairs of hands - closed, gripping, and open - while April gets the same open and gripping hands as the earlier release, along with a new right grip designed to hold a pencil. Plenty of other extras are here, including Casey's hockey mask (more reuse from Ultimate Casey), binoculars, a wrench, a hammer, one of Leonardo's katanas, three pencils, Turtle Wax (reused from the accessory set), a bottle of "Turtle-Aid," and the drawings of Leonardo and Donatello April made. There's everything we need here for these looks, save for the broken porch swing. Lastly, there's a small foot stand for April, since we all know how hard standing in high heels is.

This set may not be necessary for those who aren't completionists or die-hard Turtle fans, but it's nice to get two previously released characters in different outfits, and the pair makes for some nice displays. I wonder what else NECA will do with the first movie since there's not much left to work with, but the upcoming jumpsuit April may give us a good idea of where it'll head.
