Nightmare Demon (American Werewolf In London) Review
Nightmare Demon
American Werewolf In London (Neca)An American Werewolf in London is a movie that's not likely to come up in discussion, but it's still a cult classic with plenty of fans, myself included. One noteworthy scene in the film was one of David's strange nightmares, in which a quiet evening at home with his family is disrupted when a group of wolf-faced Nazis show up and reek havoc. It doesn't really have much to do with the rest of the film - it's sorta just there, but it's still the most iconic and terrifying sequence in it. SOTA did these literally inhuman Nazi punks years ago, and now NECA's had their turn with them.

The front of the box has a cool illustration by Abrar Ajmal, showcasing the four demons with a ring of fire. It's lenticular as well, giving it a nice 3D effect. Other than that, it's the usual Ultimate packaging, with photos of the figure all around and a plastic tray where everything is easy to remove, requiring only a piece of tape and a plastic tie to be cut out.

As stated above, there were four demons in the movie, each with a different look. The default head looks to be a decayed, hairless wolf, donning a helmet as part of its look. The second head is a more alive werewolf, with plenty of hair on it. The remaining two are more human-like, one has a lot of hair, but the other is bald, and both bear wolf-like facial features. All four heads are greatly accurate to the masks used in the film, and the clean paint apps combined with plenty of wash helps brings them out. The helmet on the decayed head is a separate piece, so it can be removed, but the only other head it'll fit on is the bald head.

Standing around 7 1/4" tall, the demon is dressed in a rather accurate Nazi uniform, and the main body has nothing inhuman about it. If you feel like it, you could pop on a more human head, and have yourself a generic Nazi for your other figures to beat up. Still, the detail is very nice, and it too has clean paint all around. The figure has three sculptors credited - Alex Heinke, Jason Frailey, and Adrienne Smith - and a team effort was clearly needed to bring this character to life, especially with those funky heads.

The articulation is as expected out of a NECA figure, but here, it seems to be a little better than usual. The nightmare demon has a ball-jointed head, neck, and chest, swivel/hinge shoulders, elbows, wrists, knees, and ankles, swivel waist and thighs, and ball/socket hips. All of the joints move well and have pretty good range, with the elbows bending deep enough to maintain good weapon poses. However, tight joints seem to be an issue with this guy, as the right knee and left elbow were stuck on him, and need hot water to get moving. I've heard reports of knees breaking with this figure, so I knew to be careful.

The accessories all come from the soldiers' sole scene in the film, but there's enough to make it a fun figure. As stated before, there are four portraits with the figure, all of which swap at the neck, and they do so with ease. There are three machine guns, each of which are a different style, and they look excellent. Also here are two knives, both the same sculpt, but one has blood on it, and a torch with a removable flame. Lastly, there are two extra right grips - one for the torch and one for the firearms - and they swap very easily. I wish an extra left hand was included for two-handed gun poses, however.

Having this figure in-hand now makes me wish I got it earlier, since it's amazing. The stuck joints and lack of extra left hand for more poses are my only grips, and it makes for a great army builder/generic Nazi body. It's too bad no other figures for this movie have been released aside from some Toony Terrors, because I would love a David/Jack two-pack in the Ultimate world.
