Dr. Bunsen Honeydew Muppet Show (Palisades)I've been on a Palisades kick as of late, specifically their Muppets. I've got a couple to look at, so I'll keep these reviews coming with Muppet Labs' own Dr. Bunsen Honeydew. Dr. Bunsen's sculpt is done by Kathy Jeffers, and his head is round and green; like a honeydew (hence his last name). I feel they went too heavy on the green for him, but the head sculpt is very spot-on to the puppet. Bunsen wears glasses, yet has no eyes, and the glasses have a thicker frame on the figure, which helps to reduce the likeliness of them breaking. Like Kermit, his head and hands have a rough texture, and it definitely brings out some realism in his sculpt. Standing around 5" tall, Bunsen is dressed in his usual lab cost, with a vest and striped suit underneath. I'm not sure why they made his coat a softer material, since it wouldn't restrict any articulation if it was a more rigid material. Still, the wrinkles in the coat give it a realistic look, and the proportions are solid. The paint is clean all over, aside from some small markings on his right forearm, and the lines of the suit could have been done better. Bunsen doesn't have a lot articulation, but what he has works great. He gets swivels at the head, wrists, waist, and hips, along with swivel/hinge shoulders. The additional arm articulation is unusual as his left arm has a hinged elbow, but the right arm is permanently bent 90 degrees at the elbow, with a bicep swivel right above it. While bicep and elbow joints on both arms would've been nice, you can still manage some good poses out of what joints he has. The right hand is pointing, while the left hand is designed to hold accessories. As part of Palisades' dedication to awesome accessories, Bunsen comes with something that's not so much an accessory as it is a whole 'nother figure. The robot rabbit comes from an early season two episode, the same one Beaker made his debut in, no less. While it doesn't look exactly like it did in the episode, it's still a great sculpt thanks to Industrial Zoo. The rabbit stands about 4 3/4" tall and swivels at the head, lever, shoulders, hips (T-crotch-esque joint), and ankles. Be mindful of the hips as there is a chance they'll be tight, and with the thin legs, breaking them free will require some care. Bunsen also comes with a "TOP SECRET" Muppet Labs notebook, made out of a soft plastic. The book is sculpted to open up to reveal Bunsen's secret notes… a tic-tac-toe game and a shopping list. It fits well into the gripping hand, and the arm articulation allows for some nice poses with it. Lastly, he has the standard oval "25 Years" base, though he doesn't really need it, being able to stand up just fine on his own. I don't know what it is I like so much about Bunsen. Is it his great sculpt? His asymmetrical arm articulation? The robot rabbit pack-in? Or just because I love this line? Whatever it is, he's one of my favorite figures Palisades has done, and looking at him again makes me want to grab the Muppet Labs playset so he can get back to his inventions. Oh, and to get a Beaker as well. - 4/19/23 ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() |
