4-Pack (Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles - 1990 Movie) Review
4-Pack
Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles - 1990 Movie (Neca)Go ninja go ninja go!

It's been over 30 years since Secret of the Ooze hit theaters, and it served as a pretty fun follow-up to the original TMNT movie. To celebrate its belated anniversary, NECA finally did the four turtles from it, and while they've been hitting Walmarts as two-packs for a good amount of time, they first showed up as a four-pack pre-order exclusively through the NECA Store, showing up last month. I'm glad I went that route, cause I can't find the two-packs to save my life.

The box, unlike most four packs, is tall rather than long and bears a nice recreation of the original VHS' cover on the front using the figures. That's actually on a slip cover that can be removed to reveal a window box inside. There's only one plastic tie each for the turtles, and most of the accessories are held in place with a plastic cover, making every thing easy to remove.

Sculpted by Trevor Zammit and Jason Frailey, the second set of turtles share most of their molds with their first movie counterparts, but there is new tooling present, most notably the heads. The heads are a little smaller, and the masks are slightly different as well. The expression are somewhat different as well, as while the 1990 Leonardo figure had a stern look, this one sports an open-mouth smile, as does Michelangelo. Donatello still has his stern look, but a bit goofier looking now, and Raphael still has a slight grimace. The bandana tails are designed to drape over the shoulders, but there's no option to display them blowing in the wind.

The bodies seem to be the same, but the belts are all new. Leonardo still has his scabbards, and Donatello has adjustable leather straps to hold his staff, but now Raphael and Michelangelo get to carry their weapons in their belts. It's a bit tricky getting Mikey's nunchucks in the holsters, but it can be done. The reused bodies work well here, and the paint just looks beautiful. It's clear a lot of effort went into making it look screen-accurate, and there's clean work all around aside from some bleed around the nails. To me, it seems as if the turtles all have different heights, if not proportions, but they all stand around 6 1/2" tall.

The articulation is mostly unchanged from the first movie turtles, but with one notable difference. The ball-jointed heads work great, but the swivel bandana ties don't as much due to the design. They can manage plenty of arm poses thanks to the swivel/hinge shoulders, elbows, and wrists, and the double-jointed elbows seem to work better with these ones. The ball-jointed chests don't have a lot of tilt, and that can be blamed on the shells. The major change articulation-wise is that instead of ratcheting swivel/hinge joints, the hips are now ball-socket joints, allowing them to move much easier. Below them are the same-ol', same-ol', with swivel thighs, swivel/hinge upper knees and ankles, and hinged lower knees. These figures can manage tons of poses, though better range in the chest would've been nice.

Moving onto accessories, there are four extra pairs of hands - relaxed, pointing, thumbs up, a right designed to hold a pizza slice, and a left for holding a mutagen canister - that can be used with any turtle, and the harder plastic reduces fear of tearing out the joints when swapping. Donatello also gets an alternate left forearm with a watch hidden in the wristband, definitely a nice little touch. The signature weapons for each turtle are also included: Leo's katanas, Donnie's staff, Raph's sai, and Mikey's nunchucks. There's nothing too special about most of them, but the nunchucks have posable cords for dynamic poses.

Outside of the basic turtle stuff, there's also two mutagen canisters, one full and one empty, a foam bat, a fire extinguisher that's a reuse and possible retool of the one Tokka and Rahzar had, two sausage links for Mikey, a pizza slice that slides onto Raph's sai, a cardboard pizza box, and four pizza crusts. It's enough for cool display options, and if you got the NECA-exclusive accessory set, you'll get to do a lot more.

While the general consensus is that the first Turtle movie is the best one, I will admit I like Secret of the Ooze a bit more, just like how I prefer these over the first movie figures. Outside of the lack of range in the chests and no extra bandana tail options, these figures are a lot of fun, and I'm glad to finally see them made. Only time will tell if NECA will ever tackle the third movie, and I'm personally hoping they do.
