Bebop and Rocksteady Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles - Classic Cartoon (Neca)At last, I finally have them… The thing that got me into Ninja Turtles in the first place was one of NECA's two-packs. Specifically, Bebop and Rocksteady. I decided to give them a shot and tried to nab the two off Target's website, but to no avail, and this was during a time Targets in MD rarely, if ever, got the Turtle line. There were a few other opportunities to get them online, but I passed every time. Once NECA announced they would be selling them again as part of a Black Friday sale, I jumped right on them and succeeded in obtaining the duo, filling a hole in my collection. Bebop is sculpted by Trevor Zammit, and has been given everything he needs: jacket, necklace, wrist and waist chains (made of real metal), shoulder pads, and grenades. The sculpt is very accurate to how he looks on-screen, and the paint certainly helps, with cel-shading on the skin and painted outlines all around to really give him that animated feel. Standing around 7" tall, Bebop has a hinged jaw that lets him express himself, and his glasses hinge up to reveal his eyes underneath, but for some reason, his eyes are solid black with white pupils. Not very cartoon-accurate, I should say. Rocksteady, also sculpted by Zammit, is a little shorter at about 6 1/2" tall, though the lack of hair may be why. His upper body is actually a softer plastic covering a chest joint underneath, and it's either me, or the overlay is misaligned on mine. Like the warthog, Rocksteady has a hinged jaw and cartoon-like paint, with the only noticeable blip being some discoloration by his left shoulder. Both B&R are muscular, hefty guys, but not quite as big as their Super7 counterparts. There's plenty of articulation on the duo, starting with a great ball-jointed head that is designed to hunch forward, but side-to-side motion isn't all that great. There's also swivel/hinge shoulders, wrists, hips, and ankles, swivel biceps, thighs, and shins, double-hinged elbows and knees, ball-jointed chest, and the aforementioned hinged jaws. Both have plenty of range in their joints, though Rocksteady's chest isn't as good due to the torso overlay. When I got these two, I expected some stuck joints as with any NECA toon Turtle, but not as much as I actually got. Possibly due to cold temperatures, almost every joint on these two were tight as all shell, and a hot water bath helped free them up. Even without the cold joints, I would recommend pouring hot water or blasting a hairdryer on the hips, as they're really tight ratcheting hinges, and I have seen some people break them or the pelvis trying to move them. The chest and left bicep joints became unglued on Bebop, so I had to glue them back on. There isn't a lot of accessories here, but the duo have some nice extras. First, there's three pairs of hands for each - fists, gripping, and open - and they swap easily, but every time you swap the left hand on Bebop, you'll have to reloop the chain around his wrist, which can be annoying. There's also two laser guns and two rifles, allowing them to fight the toitles, and a communicator with Shredder's face on it. It's not a lot, but they can grip the weapons easily, and the extra hands enhance your display options. Bebop and Rocksteady were two figures in the line I was hoping to get someday, and I'm glad to finally have them. They're crucial characters in any TMNT collection, and the nice designs, articulation, and accessories makes them plenty of fun. Just be careful with those hips; I lucked out, but I know a lot of people haven't. - 12/25/22 ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() |
