Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles - Mirage Comics (Neca)(This review was written back in June 2022, so it may sound a little dated) It was last October that I reviewed the first of LootCrate and NECA's series two TMNT crates, which happened to be a letdown (shirt was good, though), and I hoped the second crate would come soon and be better. But nothing showed up, and me and everyone else who purchased these feared we'd never get them. Nobody knows what happened to prevent any more crates from shipping, but apparently it got worked out, because the next one is finally here. One catch, though; the second crate was supposed to be video game-related, but we got the third crate, which is themed after the original Mirage comics, instead. Eh, I'm not complaining. As long as we got something, I'm good. The crate uses the same decal as the previous one did, with the Mirage logo, and it fits here better than on the movie one. It's also a little bigger than usual, even though there isn't much here. As usual, an exclusive NECA figure is included, and this one has one of the mutant Shredder clones from the "Return to New York" three-parter, specifically the "Claw" Shredder. The packaging for it shares the same shape and design motifs used for the Fugitoid I reviewed a while back, and it has nice illustrations and photos, but it also has those usual plastic ties, and we all know by now that I hate them. The Claw Shredder looks somewhat like the regular Shredder, except with a pointy jaw (or at least mask), big claws for hands (of course), and giant feet. The torso, along with the upper arms and legs, are reused from the Mirage Shredders we've seen in the past, but the head, neck, shoulder guards, forearms, and lower legs are all new sculpts provided by Josh Sutton. The new tooling looks great, but most people's attention will go to the claws. They're well done, and the lumpy texture adds to their appearance. The sculpt goes hand-in-hand with the paint, which has no noticeable bleed or slop at all (or apparently any), and clean black lines. Standing about 6 3/4" tall, the Claw Shredder has a ball-jointed head, swivel/hinge neck, shoulders, pincers, and ankles, swivel biceps, waist, and thighs, double-hinged elbows and knees, and ball-socket hips. This is the first LootCrate figure to use those hip joints instead of swivel/hinge ones, and they move much better. However, the shoulders, upper elbows, and upper knees are pretty floppy, the arm joints mainly because of the heavy claws. The left bicep was stuck on mine due to soft plastic (blame the summer heat), but a few minutes in the freezer fixed that. No accessories are included here, but it's not like this guy needs any. The last crate only had three other items alongside the figure, and that's sadly the case here. The first additional item is a t-shirt, and it contains the TMNT logo above a drawing of Raphael coming from the second issue. These crates always have great apparel, and this is no exception. Next, there's a single pin of a turtle head, complete with red masks like in the comics (Raph wasn't the only one who had one). Lastly, there's a… fanny pack? Who even wears these anymore? It's of a Utrom, and it works considering how they rested in the stomachs of their android bodies, but I'm not going to be wearing it any time soon. Okay, so this isn't a huge improvement over the last crate, and I was expecting more to be included here, but it's at least somewhat nicer. The Claw Shredder is miles better than the crappy Danny, and the fanny pack, while not something I'd be caught dead wearing, is something unique. I just hope we don't have to wait too long for the next two crates, because I want this waiting game to end already. - 6/30/22   by RMaster007 |
