Splinter / Shredder Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles - 1990 Movie (Neca)The rivalry of Oroku Saki and Hamato Yoshi; one died, the other became the leader of a ninja clan known as the Foot, known as the Shredder. What he didn't know was that his slain rival's pet, Splinter, was exposed to mutagen and seeks to avenge his master. It's only fitting that these two would be packed together when the movie line moved from GameStop to Walmart, and while I never saw one when they first came out, they're now all over the place. I was at a local store yesterday and saw SIXTEEN of them! Crazy, right? The packaging's basically what I described when I reviewed the other movie figures, so let's move onto the figures themselves. The Splinter puppet used the the film had fur like a real rat would, and the sculptor(s) did a good job translating that look in plastic. The texture matches his on-screen appearance, and the paint wash helps makes it look more realistic. The face looks great as well, though comparing it to shots from the film, it's a bit longer than it should be. His robe is actually tailored cloth, and it has some holes and fraying to make it look aged (it's more than likely he found it in the trash). The belt keeps it closed to prevent flashing (even though he has nothing to hide under there), but the guys over at NECA didn't bother to tie it correctly. Splinter may act like a human, but he's still a rat, so it's no surprise he stands short at about 5” tall. Being skilled in ninjitsu, it's no surprise Splinter has plenty of articulation. He has ball-joints at the head, neck, chest, and waist, allowing you to pose him as hunched over as you like. There's also swivel/hinge joints at the shoulders, elbows (double-jointed), wrists, hips, knees, ankles, and toes, swivels at the thighs and tail, and a bendable wire inside the tail. The joints can be a little tight at first, but they all work well together for plenty of cool poses. He can be a pain to keep standing on those little feet, however, and the lack of peg holes in the feet doesn't help. The GameStop release of Splinter only had a mutagen canister, nunchucks, and a slice of pizza, but this release gets a good deal more. The nunchucks are the same, but the mutagen canister now has a crack in it, like the one from the accessory pack (though I don't think this set always had that specific canister), and the reused pizza slice from the turtles has been replaced by a new slice that's designed to clip onto his head, reenacting a scene from the film. He also now has interchangeable hands, something he's been needing for a while. Aside from the open hands, he also has a set of pointing hands, meditating hands, and gripping hands. All swap easily, and help with display options. Lastly, he has a pair of slippers, which can be used to keep him upright. I already got a Splinter when he was still lingering around GameStops, so why'd I buy a second one aside from the new accessories? For the Shredder he came with, of course. The likeness on him is great, and his mask can be removed to reveal the permanent scratches on his face from when Splinter attacked him years ago. His outfit has some nice texturing on it, and yes, it's supposed to be glittery like that. The spiked guards on his forearms can be removed if you want to, and his shirt collar is a separate piece for some reason. One of his shoulder guards is missing a spike, though, and I'm not sure if it fell off while I was playing with or if mine never had it to begin with. The paint is good, especially on the face, and the same goes for Splinter. Shredder stands at a pretty average figure height of about 7" tall. As for Saki's articulation, he has ball-joints at the head, neck, and waist, swivel/hinge shoulders, elbows (double-jointed), wrists, hips, upper knees, and ankles, swivel thighs, and hinged lower knees. Like Splinter, he has some tightness to the joints, especially those hips with the ratcheting hinges, but nothing that really prevents him from posing. He has some balancing issues, however. Shredder's arsenal includes three pairs of hands (closed, gripping, and open), a double-headed spear, and a knife that fits into a small sheath, which itself can be fitted inside the elastic belt around Shredder's plastic belt. The really cool thing with him is that cape. It's big, has bendable wires inside both edges, and clips around his neck. It's somewhat hard to clip, but he looks even better with it on. While the four turtles are necessary, these two are as well, and the great articulation and accessories helps make them a more worthwhile purchase. They're warming the shelves at Walmart now, so grab one before they all run out. Now if I could just find the April/Casey two-pack this easily… - 6/29/22 ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() |
