April O 'Neil (Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles - 1990 Movie) Review
April O 'Neil
Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles - 1990 Movie (Neca)Reporting live from Channel 6-er, 3 news…

It was pretty inevitable that the reporter April O'Neil would be a part of the TMNT movie line, and this one had the benefit of being a pre-order. People started getting them in a couple months after the initial sale, but for those who passed on it, Walmart didn't get any in until April of this year. Makes sense, I suppose, but I couldn't for the life of me find her in-store. Like Casey, I ended up paying $45 for her at a toy show.

The sides and back are much like the previously released ultimate Casey, and by extension the rest of the line, but the front is pretty unique. It's a series of lenticular TV screens, all of which show Ms. O'Neil. Fits well given her occupation. On the inside, the figure is held in with twist ties instead of those annoying plastic ties that are a pain to cut out.

In the original movie, April was played by Judith Hoag, who was on-board with being made into an action figure. Her likeness is replicated well onto a 6 3/4" figure, and while the hair could look better, the face is pretty dead-on. She has a neutral expression, but there is an extra head with a happier appearance. Both faces have nice, clean paint, but the paint is the main issue with the hair. I guess it's not very easy to replicate a curly style into plastic.

April wore a few different outfits in the movie, if I recall, and you might recognize this specific one from when she encountered the Foot Soldiers. The shirt she's wearing is reddish-purple with a blue diamond pattern, but this isn't an exact replication of the one she wore in the film (for starters, her sleeves weren't rolled up). The skirt and coat are accurate, however, and the paint all over the body is very good, with practically no bleed at all, even on the ring. Her legs are painted a darker hue than her skin, as to suggest she's wearing leggings or pantyhose, neither of which she wore in the movie, and the paint is rubbing off on the joints there anyways, so why that color? There's also a red smudge on the back or her neck, but the hair covers it up.

April may not be the fighter like the Turtles and Casey are (though she did try to hold her own against the Foot), but she's still plenty articulated. She has a ball-jointed head and waist, swivel/hinges at the shoulders, elbows, wrists, knees, and ankles, ball-socket hips, and swivel thighs. The head and waist offer plenty of tilt, and the heads swap easily. The hips are restricted quite a bit by the skirt, so don't expect to get her in any crazy poses. The elbows and knees are double-jointed, and while the elbows look great, the knees just look weird. I've seen a few Aprils, mainly ones coming from AliExpress, with single-jointed knees, so I guess that was a change made when producing more for retail. Overall, though, all the joints move well with nothing stuck, and you'll be able to get some nice poses out of her.

Onto the accessories, and we got some pretty nice ones. There's the extra head I already mentioned, but there's extra hands as well. She has relaxed hands by default, but those can be swapped out easily for a pair of gripping hands, a closed right, and a pointing left. She also has her Channel 3 microphone with a bendable cord for on-the-scene reporting, a purse made out of softer plastic, with great paint that sadly has some cracking, a sai, specifically Raphael's, though this one is a little bigger than what his figure came with, and a stack of pizza boxes that I assume are store-bought. Since an action figure is bound to have as much trouble standing in high heels as real people do, April includes a little base with a peg that goes into either foot. It won't always keep her upright in more dynamic poses, but it does help give her more stability.

April's a good figure overall with relatively few issues, and is pretty much a necessity for your collection. Sure, you can pass on the Saki/Yoshi two-pack and Danny, but you need an April; she's an important character in the film. I have a feeling that this and the two-pack with variants of her and Casey Jones may be the last figures from the first movie NECA does, but I would at least like an updated Danny since the LootCrate figure was garbage, or a single re-release of Raphael in his trenchcoat, just so I don't have to get a second Casey.
