Danny Pennington Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles - 1990 Movie (Neca)Last year, when LootCrate revealed their TMNT series, many, including me, we mainly drawn in because each crate would include a figure by NECA. They weren’t anything real special, with most of them being redecos and repaints, but this year’s wave was more promising because it had pretty much newly sculpted figures, and they weren’t variants of existing ones, either. The first crate, which is movie-related, began shipping out like a month or two ago, and rather than just review the included figure, I’ll go over what is included alongside it. First let’s talk about the figure; Danny Pennington, the teenager who gets involved with the Foot Clan and Shredder. He’s one of the characters made just for the movie, and I don’t think he’s as memorable as the more major ones like the Turtles, Splinter, and Casey, hence why he’s a LootCrate exclusive. The packaging for him here is pretty much the same as the initial GameStop releases of the movie figures, but with a sticker to tell you that it’s a LootCrate exclusive. When describing the sculpt and paint, I think the most important place to start is the head. He looked great in pre-release shots, but the actual product? Not that good. Don’t get me wrong, the sculpted likeness looks great, but the cheap-looking paint ruins it. We do get two different heads, however: one with a bandana and a slightly open mouth, and another with no bandana and a more focused expression. The second head is much nicer, mainly because of the expression. I feel that it’s also worth noting that this figure seems to have been built off of the John Conner figure from NECA’s Terminator line, mainly because the lower half was lifted right from him. I think this is the main reason for why Danny’s shorter than he should be at around 5 ¾”. I’m pretty sure he was taller than the Turtles in the movie, so why couldn’t have they made him taller? The paint outside of the heads is great, however, and they even got the licensing to do his Sex Pistols shirt. While it’s not a 100% accurate rendition of it, it still looks great enough. Danny does pose well, but he has a few issues including a major one. The head is the old style of ball-joint NECA used to do, where a ball goes into the neck and a peg goes into the head, but the heads do swap easily. The arms have swivel/hinges at the shoulders, elbows, and wrists, and I would take care if I were you, especially with the wrists, which have thin pegs. What I’d suggest is that you pop out the wrists and run hot water on them before posing them. Hidden underneath the shirt is an ab crunch with some good tilt, as well as a waist swivel. His hips are swivel/hinge, but this is where that major issue is. Both legs go out properly, but the right hip refuses to kick up because the peg is stuck extremely tight, and trying to move it is just putting pressure on the peg. See NECA? This is why you switched to ball and socket hips. The rest of the leg articulation is good, however, with swivel thighs, swivel/hinge knees, and ball-jointed ankles. As for accessories, Danny only has two: the extra head and a cassette player. The player looks great and both hands are sculpted to hold it, and you can place the headphones on his head or around his neck. While Danny’s not the first LootCrate figure to have minimal accessories (looking at you, Shell Shock Turtle), these ones at least allow for a few good display options. Now for what else is included in the LootCrate. Spoiler alert: there sadly isn’t a lot. There’s a little pin set of Casey Jones and Raphael, a pair of coasters (which are Mirage themed for some reason…), and a very cool long-sleeve shirt. The shirt has a nice graphic on the front, and I love the color used for it. Needless to say, it’s much better than the Danny figure. All in all, I’m afraid to say that compared to previous LootCrates, this one was a disappointment. There’s not a lot included, and the Danny figure would’ve been more passable if he had better paint on the head and better hip joints, but damn do I love that shirt. Thankfully, we got three more LootCrates in this wave to look forward to, with the video game one hopefully shipping out next month, so let’s hope they’re improvements. ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() |
