Oroku Saki / Hamato Yoshi (Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles - 1990 Movie) Review
Oroku Saki / Hamato Yoshi
Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles - 1990 Movie (Neca)I think the main thing I love about NECA’s TMNT line (aside from the great sculpts and accessories) is just how deep they went it. Rather than just doing the four turtles, a few allies and villains, and being done with it, they showed just how much they love the license by doing pretty much everyone they can. Just look at the cartoon line; we got the Triceratons before Splinter. This applies to the movie line as well, because not only did we get the first ever figure of Danny Pennington (who I will review soon), but also Oroku Saki, the man before he became the Shredder, and Hamato Yoshi, Splinter’s owner (unless you count the old Mutations figures by Playmates).

The packaging is the same as the other two-packs we’ve gotten at Walmart so far, being a big window box that require nothing more than some tape and plastic ties to be cut to get everything out. We also get some nice photos of the figures on the back, and a description of the scene where these two came from.

Both figures share the same body sculpt, but the heads are different. Saki has a bit of a grin on his face, while Yoshi has a more stern and focused expression. Saki also gets an extra head, with claw marks on the side of his face and a pissed-off look. While their faces were mostly obscured by shadows in the movie, the sculpts here are quite accurate to how they looked on-screen. The robes and pants have some good texturing to give them some realism, and the robes are made of a softer plastic so they don’t hinder articulation. You can remove the robes as well, with some alternate arms to go with the feature. The bare torso underneath has quite a bit of realistic musculature and veins, and those forearm guards on the accompanying arms can be removed if you want to display them without those. The paint on the heads are nice and clean, and there’s wash all over the rest of the body to make it look realistic. Both figures stand around 6 ¾” tall, putting them in the company’s usual 1:10/7” scale.

We got some great articulation on both figures, and while the joints can be a bit tough to work with at first, you can still manage some nice poses. Both have a ball-jointed head that has plenty of tilt, but swapping out Saki’s heads can be tough (yet Yoshi’s head comes off easily). The arms are outfitted with swivel/hinge joints at the shoulders, elbows, and wrists. The elbows are the double-jointed type, allowing for plenty of arm poses, and it appears as if the chest is sculpted to allow the shoulders to move forward in the front of the body. The ball-joints at the chest and waist allow for plenty of bending, and it helps to bring out some more dynamic poses. The hips are the swivel/hinge type as opposed to the ball-and-socket NECA uses more often, and these have ratchets in them as well, but you shouldn’t have any trouble moving them. Rounding those off are swivels at the thighs and shins, double-hinged knees (with a swivel/hinge for the upper knee), and rocker/hinge ankles.

Now for the accessories, and dear lord, we got a lot. There’s the extra head for Saki I already mentioned, and there’s also the removable robes with corresponding arms for them. Saki has the robe on in the box, but Yoshi just goes shirtless. It’s not hard to get them on and off, you just have to pop off the head and arms, slide it onto the torso, and put the removed parts back on. Hell, you can even display them with sleeveless robes if you want to. We also get three sets of hands for each of them. Both come wearing fists, but we also have a pair of grips and a pair of open hands, and all pop in and out of the two pairs of arms easily.

There’s also a good chunk of weapons as well. Included are two axes, two staffs, two swords, a pair of tonfas, and two different nunchucks. One of them has a posable wire like with Michelangelo’s pair, and the other has a metal chain and little spikes on each end. While getting the weapons into the gripping hands can be tough, it’s still possible, but you just have to be careful with them. Lastly, we got the cornerstone of this set; pre-mutated Splinter… two of them. One’s in a typical rat pose, and the other’s in a fighting stance, and both are sculpted well to capture the feel of that realistic but goofy little rat puppet. His cage is included as well, with a real metal hook for its stand, and you can pop off the bottom of it and pop either Splinter on the peg.

The only thing I love more than when NECA does these deep cuts with the TMNT license is when they do as much as they can with them, and they certainly poured all their heart into this set. Both Saki and Yoshi pose great, and all the accessories included make them worth the $50, making this easily one of their best two-packs yet. While I don’t think some will go for this set, I still think everyone who wants it should get their hands on it. And even if you are a Turtles fan, just get these two so you can have some generic karate guys for your shelf. Trust me, it’ll be worth it.
