Goliath Gargoyles (Neca) (Neca)Since NECA’s all about horror/action/sci-fi movies and Ninja Turtles, it’s always an oddity when they do something out of those areas, but it’s also a good thing as well. Seriously, how many of us were expecting them to do ALF? But earlier on in the year, NECA revealed that they teamed up with Disney to do a whole line of Gargoyles figures, and a lot of people were excited, and some like me had an excuse to check out the series. If you haven’t yet, please do so on Disney+, it’s damn good. Going back to NECA, their first figure in the line, Goliath, has been hitting retailers for a while now, and there’s plenty more planned for next year. Let’s bring up the packaging first, and I’m not gonna sugarcoat here, it’s HUGE. Seriously, I was amazed by the size when I first saw it in person, it’s 11” tall. The art here is great as well, and let’s not forget that this is the usual window flap packaging. Lastly, you just have to deal with some tape and plastic ties to get the figure out. With Goliath’s sculpt, this isn’t like the cartoon TMNT figures where the figure has painted outlines and cel-shading, it’s actually a mixture of realism and animation, with nicely detailed musculature and veins all around the body, and I feel like this style fits more for him. We have two different portraits for him, a regular, stern look, and a fierce expression with fangs showing and blanked out eyes, and both look great. While Goliath stands tall at around 7 ¾”, the real big part of him are his wings. These and the tail are separate from the figure in the package, and for good reason, both of the wings are around 11” long each, and the tail is 9 ½” long. The wings are made out of a harder plastic, while the tail is a soft material with a bendable wire inside. The paint on the figure is really nice, with no slop at all and plenty of wash to bring out the details. Goliath is pretty well-articulated, and it shows. The head is on a ball-joint that allows it to tilt up and down very well, but side to side and rotation is a bit limited due to the hair, though at least you can swap the heads out easily. The arms are outfitted with swivel/hinge joints at the shoulders and wrists, double-hinged elbows, and swivel biceps. The sculpt hinders the upper arm articulation, but thankfully not too much. The ball-jointed chest and waist have a good amount of tilt, and the ball hips are nice and tight. Adding to those are swivel thighs, swivel/hinge knees, and rocker/hinge joints at the ankles AND toes. These joints have a bit of ratchet to them, and they allow for plenty of deep stances. The bendable tail also have a s/h joint where it plugs into the body, and so do the wings. However, the wings are where I had issues. They do have ratchet joints to support their size, but they aren’t all that great, as the right wing tends to droop down, and the post supporting the hinge in the left one pops out. While every other joint works great, the wings are where improvements are needed. It can be hard to get Goliath standing at times thanks for those wings, but the tail helps to support him. Also, why are those balls for the hips painted? We don’t have a lot of accessories with Goliath, but what’s here is still pretty good. There’s the extra head I already mentioned, as well as some extra hands. He comes wearing open/clawing hands, but we also have a pair of closed hands and a gripping left. There’s also an open book, with some great detail and paint to give it an aged appearance, and a little jalapeno pepper. If you watched the show, you’d understand the inclusion of it. While Goliath isn’t perfect, there isn’t much wrong with him, and he’s a very great figure overall. It’s nice to see NECA pouring their love into a license that isn’t Turtles, and I just know I’ll be getting every figure from this one. ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() |
