Colossal Chrome Dome Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles - Classic Cartoon (Neca)Move over, Krang, we got the biggest (non-quarter-scale) figure in NECA’s ’87 TMNT line, and his name is Chrome Dome. And the company seems pretty boastful about that. The packaging is pretty much like what we’ve been seeing with these single-packed TMNT figures so far, what with the artwork and all. It definitely looks nice, and I wouldn’t be surprised if the art on the back is a hint to a future figure (hint: the fifth turtle). It’s collector-friendly like always, but I hope you don’t mind cutting out plastic ties like usual. Chrome Dome appeared twice in the series, and his height was different in both. “Planet of the Turtleoids” depicted him as gigantic, but “Night of the Rogues” made him smaller, standing only just a few feet taller than everyone else. The height of the figure here seems to be based off of the latter episode, standing around 9 ¾” tall, a whole head taller than the Android Krang figure. All of the details are pretty accurate to his on-screen appearance, but the belt with sheaths isn’t from the cartoon. In fact, it comes from the original Playmates figure. Said belt is removable, though, in case you want to display him without it. The paint is the usual cel-shading like with this line, but it’s different here. On most of these figures, the “cel-shading” usually amounts to “paint the back of the figure a darker color”, but the shading here actually looks like the show. The shade picked here is too dark, however, and I wished it was a lighter hue of gray. Another complaint is how the glue holding in some pieces was weak, and I had to reglue one of the sheaths and a wristband. Chrome Dome’s size is matched by his articulation, and he’s loaded with it. He has a ball-jointed head, chest, and hips, swivel/hinge shoulders and wrists, swivel biceps, waist, and thighs, double-hinged elbows and knees, rocker/hinge ankles, and hinged toes. Double-hinge joints are always nice, and how often do we get toe hinges with NECA figures? Everything moves well with barely any tightness, aside from the wrists, and especially with the extra hands. The painted joints make the hinges hard to move at first, and you might need to warm them up to get them moving. Plus the joints are already black plastic underneath… just… what? And don’t get me started on his tendency to topple over in certain poses… Moving onto the accessories, Chrome Dome has nine different hands. He comes wearing a set a grasping hands, but there’s also a pair of chopping hands, a pair of sword grip hands, a pair of fists, and a gun grip right. Everything swaps well, and the gripping hands have vertical hinges to tilt up and down, allowing for some great poses with the swords. Said swords are another thing carried over from the Playmates figure, and both are different lengths. The last two come from the show itself, with a laser gun and a computer. The computer comes from the “Night of the Rogues” episode, where Zach plugged it into Chrome Dome’s mainframe to find the turtles. While there are a few things holding him back from perfection, Chrome Dome is more proof of just how fun NECA’s Turtles line has been so far, and getting a big guy like this is certainly a treat. While I am doubtful that we’ll get another one closer in size to his first appearance, one can certainly hope. ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() |
