Zarax and Zork (Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles - Classic Cartoon) Review
Zarax and Zork
Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles - Classic Cartoon (Neca)Another day, another review, and no surprise that it’s from NECA’s TMNT line. This review is for the Triceratons Zarax and Zork. While the Triceratons were introduced pretty early on in the Mirage comics, it wasn’t until season 7 that they appeared in the original show, and it’s the same episode with Donatello as Batma- er… the “Dark Turtle”. NECA is doing a Dark Turtle for the new LootCrate series, which I already ordered, but at least for now I have the other key part of the classic episode. I’ve had these figures for quite a while now, and it took me until now to review them.

Both figures share most of the same parts, such as the arms, chest, tail, and legs. The only parts different on both are the heads, armor, and crotch area. The reuse – which comes from the Triceraton Infantryman and originally from Bebop and Rocksteady – isn’t a bad thing. It’s a good way to cut down on costs, and since most of the Triceratons look alike from the neck down, it doesn’t matter. The details are accurate to their on-screen appearances, and the heads on both look great. Both stand around 7 ¾” from the feet to the spikes, and I should note here that the tails are separate pieces in the box, like with Leatherhead, and you’ll need to heat up the hole with warm water to pop it onto the ball.

When it comes to paint, NECA did the usual thing with these figures and gave them cel shading and black lines to make it look like they jumped right out of the screen. I love it, but with these two, the paint isn’t as clean as usual. Zarax has the most problems, with rough lines, rub off, misaligned spots on the head, and other issues. Zork is much better, but he has some issues as well, such as some bleeding and marks on the back.

The articulation is the same for both figures, with a ball-jointed head, hinged jaw, swivel/hinge shoulders and wrists, swivel biceps and thighs, double-hinged elbows and knees, ball-jointed chest, tail, and hips, and rocker/hinge ankles. All the joints moved well and nothing was really tight, though the chest works better on Zarax because the outfit isn’t as restrictive. The paint tends to peel off on the wrist joints, and while it’s not a big issue, it’s worth noting that painting joints isn’t the best thing.

There isn’t too much in terms of accessories here, but it’s more than what Traag and Granitor came with. Both dinos have a pair of gripping hands, as well as a gun grip right for both. The hands swap easily and hold the included guns as well. The guns – a rifle, a blaster similar to what the original Playmates figure had, and a big-ass laser gun – are reused from the Infantryman, but they make sense here and the sculpts are great. The last thing here is an extra pair of gauntlets for Zarax, with blades sticking out. It can take quite a bit of force to take off the regular gauntlets the first time, but after that it should be easy to switch them out.

In the end, these are both pretty solid figures. The sculpts and articulation are great, and the accessories are low in count but great in selection, but the paint could look much better. I guess I just got unlucky. It looks like these two are showing up in high numbers at Target recently, and I hope the frogs are as easy to find.
