Slash and Leatherhead Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles - Classic Cartoon (Neca)NECA's really been upping their game with TMNT recently, with the new LootCrate series, upcoming movie April, and plenty of preorders. Speaking of which, this month finally sees the shipment of much-awaited preordered products, including the movie accessory pack, cartoon diorama, and the Slash/Leatherhead two-pack. The last one isn't new, having shown up at Target first, but the NECA Store offered another chance to get them. I got them and the accessory pack, which I'll be reviewing soon, but for now, time for the rogues to get the spotlight. The packaging is just like the others, so let's just move onto the figures, starting with Slash. Comparing him to the VG Slash I already own, it's not hard to tell that there's some reuse with the toon one, mainly the shell, neck, and feet. There's a lot of new tooling here, however, especially the head, hands, and armor. Everything looks nice, and the backpack on him is a separate piece if you want to take it off. The paint on him is very clean, with no slop or bleed whatsoever, and the cel shading and black lines look great. He stands about 5 1/2" tall, equal height to the turtles, because he IS a mutant turtle. The articulation isn't too much different from the turtles, either, with a ball-jointed head, swivel/hinge neck, shoulders, elbows, and wrists, swivel biceps and thighs, ball-jointed chest and hips, double-hinged knees, and rocker/hinge ankles. The neck is the only joint different from the turtles, but it doesn't seem to want to move for me. The hips and ankles, however, were not on the initial release of this two-pack, so getting those here with the preordered version was a nice upgrade. Moving onto the accessories, Slash has two swords, both of which fit well in his hands. The rifle from Donatello Trashes Slash is included here, as well as the blaster that he used to turn Burne and Vernon into turtles from the same episode. Rounding things out are his pre-mutated form, a little palm tree ("Where's my binky?!"), and a pizza with a big bite taken out of it. The accessories all look great and fit well with the character. Now that Slash is out of the way, let's take a look at Leatherhead. Much like Slash, he has a few reused parts, specifically the arms, torso, and legs, all carried over from Bebop and Rocksteady. The chest and coat is a separate piece overlaying the articulated body underneath, and the head has the added benefit of a hinged jaw. The belt is a separate piece on the waist, and has loops and grips to hold some of his weaponry. The tail is a separate piece inside the box, and all you have to do is heat up the hole in it with warm water or a hair dryer and then just pop it onto the ball. Like Slash, the paint is very neat here, though the black lines seem fuzzy in areas. Leatherhead stands taller than his friend, being about 7" tall from feet to hat. The articulation on Leatherhead is very good, with a ball-jointed head, the aforementioned hinged jaw, swivel/hinge shoulders, wrists, and hips, swivel biceps and thighs, double-hinged elbows and knees, ball-jointed chest (hidden) and tail, and rocker/hinge ankles. The elbows are a little tight, as are the hips due to them being the ratcheted type like I mentioned in my review of the LootCrate Rocksteady, but at least here they move a lot easier. Compared to Slash, Leatherhead triumphs him in terms of accessories. There's a pair of grasping hands and a pair of gripping hands to go with the fists he comes wearing, two lobsters that he can hold in his hands or on his belt loops, a bear trap that has adjustable jaws, and his flamethrower from Night of the Rogues, which is basically a shotgun with hot sauce bottles on it. The manacle is special, having a metal chain and the ability to open up and clamp onto things, but the peg snapped on mine due to it being stuck tight. The rope and net are the real winners here, however. Both are real material, with the rope being adjustable to holding ol' Leatherhead tight or anyone else, and the net is HUGE, big enough to hold the croc inside. NECA has produced some TMNT figures that won me over before, like Splinter and Baxter, but these two may just tie with them for my favorite two-pack release. Slash is great, but Leatherhead is the real winner here with the awesome rope and net. There's a few nits here and there, but it's nothing too bad. Getting another shot at these two through the NECA Store was great and I'm glad to have jumped on it, but I hope the April and Casey two-packs get a re-release soon. ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() |
