Raphael Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles (Super7) (Super7)When Rise of the Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles premiered back in 2018, it kickstarted a new line of figures from Playmates. However, declining sales of figures led to not only the end of the new figures, but the show as well. But with the new movie coming out this year, we may see more, but for now, they've been re-releasing their older figures in boxsets, and it's really something that appeals to the fans who grew up with the OG line. Super7 has been doing something different, though. They've been taking the older figures and giving them a modern day upgrade. With updated designs, more articulation, and a lot more, it's something fans both old and new can enjoy. I already reviewed the Foot Soldier, and now onto the sole Ninja Turtle of the first wave: Raphael. Like the previous figure I reviewed, he was $45 at time of release and pre-order. PACKAGING The packaging on Raphael is the same as the Foot Soldier and the rest of the line; a trapezoid-like window box with a slip cover. The slip cover is green to denote that Raph is one of the good guys, and there's a manhole cover with his head on it on the cover as well. The back of the box is adorned with the bio from the original figure, and the brick pattern is quite attractive. The box is very collector-friendly, and it's not that hard to get everything out of the plastic trays. SCULPT The figure is supposed to be a more upscaled and modern version of the original Playmates one, and all the old details seem to be here. The muscles and bulging veins and carried over here, and the front shell has a few nicks, most likely from battle, unlike the old figure. The back shell always had some nicks, but they're done differently here, and there's more detail as well. There's a mix of solid and soft plastic here, and the soft plastic allows for less restriction of the articulation. The head is much similar to how he looked on the old figure, but there's an extra head with squinted eyes, more clenched teeth, and a longer bandana tail. The bandana on both heads is given a bit of texture, making it somewhat more realistic in appearance. Raphael stands about 6" tall, and he's in the same scale as the other figures in the line, though he stands about a head taller than the NECA figures. PAINT If you compare this Raphael to the original Playmates one, you'll notice that the colors on this figure are darker, and the shell is brown as opposed to the dark green on the original. The paint has a somewhat glossy appearance, though it's not as shiny as the original figure, and there's a bit of wash as well. Aside from the differences in colors, the paint job is very clean, with no noticeable slop or bleed whatsoever. ARTICULATION The original figure only moved at the neck, shoulders, forearms, and ball-jointed hips, but Super7's take offers even more. On this Raph, the neck is a ball-joint that offers a decent range of tilt, but he can't look all the way down or up. Swapping heads is pretty tough to do, but heating up the hole in the bottom of the heads with warm water can make it easier to switch them out, and you'll want to pull straight up off the joint with some force. The shoulders, elbows, and wrists are all swivel/hinge joints which move rather easily, and there's swivel biceps as well to allow for natural arm poses. The wrists tilt up and down instead of in and out of the body, but there's an extra set of hands where the hinge moves horizontally. The ball-jointed waist works well and allows for a decent range of tilt. The swivel-hinge joints on the hips and knees move easily, as do the thigh swivels. And rounding off the articulation are rocker ankles that allow for deeper stances and hold their pose well. ACCESSORIES When it comes to accessories, Raphael is loaded, and he has enough to justify the price. There's three extra sets of hands to go with the grips he comes wearing, and aside from the horizontally-hinged hands I mentioned earlier, there's a pair of grips with the fingers spread out so he can hold his sai between them, and a pair of flexed hands. The hands swap easily and allow for plenty of different poses with the weapons. Two pairs of sai are included here, and both are the same sculpt-wise, but have different paint applications: one pair is a matte finish, and the other is glossy. All the other weapons the original figure had are included here, including the kama, fist daggers, and two shurikens. Also included is a slice of pizza, and two different turtle communicators, one open and one closed. The pizza is a signature turtle item, and the turtle coms are a nice shout-out to the original cartoon series. Finally, there's a unpainted weapons rack based directly off of what the old figures came with. It's a nice extra, and you could even snip off the weapons if you wanted. PLAYABILITY With a great range of articulation with smooth joints, and plenty of accessories, the possibilities with this figure are endless. Having alternate heads and pairs of sai are nice as well, because you can display which one you like the best. Raph can fit in well with other 7" scale figures, so you can have him fight whoever. VALUE $45 is pretty pricey for a 7" scale figure, and it's more than the usual NECA or McFarlane figure, but the great quality and amount of accessories makes the price worth it. OVERALL While the Foot Soldier is definitely a great figure, Raphael is my favorite out of the first wave. I'm not saying that because he's my favorite turtle, but because everything about the figure is great. The combination of a great sculpt, clean paint, and plenty of articulation works well, and throw in a lot of accessories and you the best figure a TMNT fan could ask for. There's plenty more for this line to offer, and I already have wave 2 on pre-order from BBTS and I'm currently waiting for it to ship. And with wave 5 most likely being announced soon, I'm keeping my fingers crossed for a Slash. ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() |
