Super Shredder Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles - 1990 Movie (Neca)30 years ago, the Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles made their theatrical debut, and it was so successful that the crew went right to work on the sequel, Secret of the Ooze, and while it wasn't as positively received as the first movie, it still has quite a lot of fans. In the film's climax, Shredder, powered up by mutagen, faced off against the Turtles. However, his plan to take them out, collapsing a pier on them all, didn't work out for him, and he died in about a minute. Despite his short screentime, the super-powered Shredder got a lot of attention. Years later, NECA has produced a new figure of "Super" Shredder. As with the first movie two-packs released earlier this year, this figure is a Walmart exclusive, but that unfortunately made him hard to get. Thankfully, around the time NECA started shipping them out, they gave fans the opportunity to order from a limited stock right off their own store. If you can find him in store, he's the standard price of $30. PACKAGING Like with all other NECA ultimates, Super Shredder is packaged the same way: a fifth panel window box with the movie's poster in front and photos of the figure on the back. Nothing too special, but it's nice. The plastic tray on the inside has the figure held in with twist ties, and a small layer of plastic holding in the additional hands. It's not very hard to open, but have some scissors handy if you're having trouble with the ties. SCULPT NECA has done some pretty impressive sculpting with the movie turtles, and Super Shredder isn't just no exception, he's beautiful. There's a lot of detail and texture in the sculpt, and he looks spot-on to his appearance in the film. Shredder's mutated from was played by Kevin Nash, but you can't really tell from the helmet, though you can see the eyes behind it, with plenty of detail on the skin. The sculpted armor looks nice, and the spikes on it are a softer material to reduce the chance of it injuring anyone. One of the best aspects of the sculpt is the cape, which is made out of a stretchy fabric material. Needless to say, NECA went all out with the details here. Super Shredder is just as much of a giant as he was in the movie, standing around 9" tall. As far as I'm concerned, he may be the tallest figure in the line. PAINT The outfit is a dusty shade of purple, with black and white highlights, making him look more like a comic book drawing than a movie character. Though that is how the outfit looked in the movie, and the paint is very neatly applied. There are a few areas where it could look better, but it looks great for the most part. The armor has a nice metallic paint job, though it could look better in a few areas. The skin has a dusty paint job as well, making it look nice and realistic. While the paint job isn't perfect, it's still very nice looking. ARTICULATION The articulation on this figure is great. The large amount of joints allow for plenty of poses, and all of them move smoothly with no need to heat anything up. Both the head and neck are ball-jointed, but the neck has a better range of tilt than the head. Both of them work well together, however. The shoulders, elbows, and wrists are swivel/hinge joints, with the elbows being the double-jointed type. There aren't any bicep joints due to the sculpt, though having those would have been nice for more natural-lookin arm poses. Not a huge loss, though. The chest and waists are also ball-jointed, and offer a huge range of motion. The waist is somewhat wobbly, though, but not so much that it greatly affects the articulation. The hips are ball-jointed instead of swivel/hinge like on previous figures, but they offer the same range of motion as those joints. There's also swivel thighs, swivel/hinge upper knees, hinged lower knees, and swivel/hinge rocker ankles. ACCESSORIES As I mentioned before, there's additional hands included with the figure, five to be exact. There's a pair of grasping/splayed hands, a pair of tight grips, and a wide gripping left, all of which swap easily. The only other inclusions here are a spear and a mutagen canister. The extra hands are meant to work with the accessories, and the spear can be posed with him holding it in one or both hands. There isn't a whole lot of accessories here, but what's here works well. QUALITY Before I got this figure, previous figures I got had problems with tight joints that needed to be warmed up to get moving, but the joints on this one move very well. I was surprised to see that I didn't need to heat up the shoulders to allow them to move better. Everything is pretty well done with this figure, though I do think the paint could have been improved on a bit. VALUE Super Shredder shares the same price as NECA's ultimate figures, which is $30. The price point here is reasonable and a pretty average value. Though if you ordered him from NECA's online store, you would have paid $23 for shipping, making the total cost around $50, which is a pretty hefty price. I will say it was nice of NECA to offer a code for $5 your next purchase if you paid that much for shipping. OVERALL I think it's safe to say that this is one of my favorite TMNT figures by NECA. The sculpt and paint are great, though the paint could look a little nicer, and the joints move very well. If you manage to find this figure, I highly advise you pick him up. You won't regret it. I did get the NECA Store-exclusive Tokka and Rahzar two-pack a while back, and I will be reviewing that soon. Next year will be SOTO's 30th anniversary, and there'll definitely be more figures. ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() |
