Squidward Tentacles Spongebob Squarepants (Super7) - Ultimates Rated 4.00 stars by RMaster007 Given that one half of the second wave of Super7's SpongeBob Ultimates is dopey, cheerful Patrick, it's no surprise the other half is his opposite, the sophisticated, grumpy Squidward.
Like the others, Super7 seemingly relied on older model sheets for designing these sculpts, and while Squidward is accurate, he's also a little off-looking. His default portrait has a zombie-like stare, and the mouth looks weird due to how curved back the corners are. Giving him half-lidded eyes would make him look better, and give him a fitting expression. The additional heads are much better, with one being a more exasperated look, wearing the Krusty Krab hat, and the other is his ever-memetic "unsure" look. The unsure head is my favorite of the three, thanks to the great detail, but it needs some more...[See More]
Patrick Star Spongebob Squarepants (Super7) - Ultimates Rated 4.60 stars by RMaster007 There's been many SpongeBob toys and collectibles over the years, but Super7 may be the first to make action figure that cater to today's standards. Their first wave of Ultimates, featuring SpongeBob and Sandy, benefitted with great sculpts and paint, useful articulation, and plenty of classic accessories. The second wave came out not too long ago, and with it is the long-awaited arrival of SpongeBob's best friend Patrick Star.
It looks a bit more obvious this wave that Super7 was basing the sculpts off stock art, and Patrick in particular looks close to how he did in season one, with a notable underbite and the forehead leaning in a bit. Even if it's an older design, the sculpt is accurate, and paint is good too, although there's some uneven edges for the eyes. He also comes with the...[See More]
Starscream Transformers (Super7) - Ultimate Rated 4.65 stars by RMaster007 After his (well-deserved) death in the G1 movie, Starscream somehow returned as a ghost robot, possessing various Decepticons in plans of restoring his mortal body. He eventually succeeded, and was last seen helplessly tumbling through space. Because of that, it's no surprise that Super7 would follow up their Ultimate Ghost of Starscream with his still-online version.
The benefit of having already done a Starscream in this line before allows Super7 to simply reuse the ghost mold, just changing the paint and plastic. When covering the previous version, I said Starscream's head looked off, but it's more spot-on here. It's possible they touched up on it a bit, but I compared the two and saw no real difference, so I guess it just looks nicer here. Like before, Starscream has three heads to...[See More]
King Grayskull Masters of the Universe - Masterverse (Mattel) - Revelation - Deluxe Rated 4.00 stars by Karl T. Face Revelations was quite a thrill for me. Really shook things up, gave us nerds a lot to geek out over, and the toys were mostly pretty good. This one hit deep clearance, though, so I assumed it wasn't the best, but it was cheap enough to roll the dice, so here we are.
And y'know what? It's not too bad. This version is pretty dark-skinned, which probably turned off a few people, but oh well. It looks fine, and across a few generations, it's not unheard of to go from this to Little Lord Fauntleroy, so I'll take it. The outfit is roughly what we got in the MYP series, basically He-Man with a few add-ons. This includes a tattered softgoods cape (with bendy wires in the hem!) and a fur mantle. Said mantle is one of my gripes here, as it's nearly impossible to get it to lay down properly. Maybe...[See More]
Steelheart SilverHawks (Super7) - Ultimate Rated 3.75 stars by RMaster007 The first Super7 Silverhawks figure I got was Steelwill, my favorite of the heroes (well, next to Bluegrass), so it's only fitting the next good guy I get is his sister Steelheart. But to be honest, I only got her now because I was able to get her for pretty cheap. Thank you, Entertainment Earth, for also knowing Super7's stuff is overpriced.
Steelheart has a great likeness, demonstrating that Super7 is better at doing realistic cartoon designs than real people. The face is accurate, and the eyes are very clean (they're probably printed on rather than painted), but her eyebrows should be a little thicker. The metal covering the rest of her hair is interesting, as it looks like hair. Either there is hair underneath, or she wanted to keep her style even after becoming a cyborg. She comes...[See More]
Buzz-Saw SilverHawks (Super7) - Ultimate Rated 4.65 stars by RMaster007 While the Silverhawks being a band of flying cyborgs is pretty neat, I will admit I find the Mob, the main villains of the show, much cooler. The variety of characters, unique designs, and personalities make them more enjoyable to watch than the good guys. One that stands out is Buzz-Saw, a giant robot who's equipped with various buzzsaws, hence the name.
Buzz-Saw has one of the least complex designs in the show, due to his simple colors and shapes. The head manages to make him look quite menacing, though, with jagged mouth, blank yellow eyes (a lighter shade than the yellow used for his body), and of course, a saw blade on top of his head. In addition to his default portrait, he gets two other heads, one with an open mouth, and another with the blade designed as if it's spinning....[See More]
Storm Shadow G.I. Joe (Super7) - Ultimates Rated 4.50 stars by RMaster007 Everybody knows ninjas are cool, hence why G.I. Joe has two; Snake Eyes on the side of good, and Storm Shadow on the side of evil. Snake Eyes is the more popular one, probably since he doesn't talk and has a wolf buddy, but Storm is pretty cool too.
It feels like the packaging for Super7's Joe Ultimates changes every wave. The second wave started taping flaps closed and using plastic ties, and now the third wave has apparently done away with making details on the packaging "stand out," for lack of a better term. The emblem, logo, dog tags, etc. are now just flat; nothing raised. It still looks pretty good, and getting most of the contents out should be easy.
Like his adversary Snake Eyes, most of Storm Shadow's head is covered, but his eyes are at least exposed. It's a simple design...[See More]
Tri-Klops Masters of the Universe - Masterverse (Mattel) - Revelation - Deluxe Rated 4.75 stars by Karl T. Face Ladies and gents, we have hit peak Tri-Klops.
Okay, I can't say that definitively. This is the first I've owned since 2K. But I really am liking the progression from preternatural swordsman to tech guy/swordsman to Dark Science Tech Bro/swordsman. And here we get two of the three!
We'll start with the reason I bought this: Cult Leader Trike. The mitre works well with the red visor, the shoulder pads add a bit of flair, and the robes hang nicely, the plastic tabard keeping the softgoods tunic from flopping about. I love the visor pattern on his stole. And the sword tucks nearly into it behind the head, if you like.
All that is removable, of course, and we also get a fairly classic head and harness. The harness is sporting three shades of green, which really adds to the look. Unfortunately,...[See More]
Screech He-Man - Masters of the Universe (Mattel) - Creatures Rated 3.50 stars by Karl T. Face Y'know what kids loved in the 80s? Animal sidekicks. Every team had one, a lot of toys came with them, many were big enough to be toys on their own. Usually sporting impractical arms and armor that never appeared in media. Here's one now.
Screech was Zoar's opposite number, the evil pet of Skeletor (or Evil-Lyn, depending on continuity). To that end, they pulled a Panthor and duped the hero's stuff in evil luchador colors. Either way, it's an eagle. Reused from Big Jim, if I'm not mistaken. It's a good sculpt for the era, apart from the oddly large feet. The wings and back are rubber, and even today, can freely be flexed to flap the wings with a press on the back.
Sadly, the talons are open slightly too far to fit a figure's wrist, so she (?) gets the same slightly art-deco perch as...[See More]
Slime Pit He-Man - Masters of the Universe (Mattel) - Playsets Rated 4.50 stars by Karl T. Face The Horde was spooky. Their logo was a bat monster. They had two bloodsucking freaks and a Bigfoot on the payroll. And while most 80s villains used mind control here and there, only Hordak used dinosaur skeleton puke to do it.
Our boys from Etheria favored smaller bases, and the Slime Pit was the little one. A very 80s fantasy set piece, it's a stone wall behind an empty pool, topped with scrollwork and bearing Hordak's face. A massive reptilian skeleton clutches the wall from behind, poking a hand through the it along the floor of the pool. The skull peers over the top.
Paint is entirely airbrushing: a few black shadows, and a lot of brick red on the wall. The bones get a dusting of brown as well.
The Slime might be more famous than this thing. It's the classic 70s recipe, now in a...[See More]
