General Flagg
Commanding Officer
GI Joe

Character:

The original commanding officer of the GI Joe team, General Flagg was murdered by Major Bludd early in the Marvel run. Unlike the toy-based Hawk, General Flagg was Hama’s Marvel creation, and wasn’t kept safe by Hasbro’s protective bubble.

Design:

Like General Austin, General Flagg was only seen in his dress uniform. This figure mimics the upper body I used for my General Austin (sans the head) but with different legs so the two figures wouldn’t be identical. The slender legs here are cut and extended in the shins to correct the proportions. The different legs and the stances in the feet give each figure a bit of personality distinct from the other.

As with my General Austin figure, it’s not technically accurate to what a dress uniform should look like. It’s in the range where it get the idea across while still feeling “toyetic”.

I used a Tomax head for Flash, so sneaking in a Xamot head into this Stars & Stripes Forever set seemed appropriate.

Although General Flagg and General Austin aren't ARAH (aside from Flagg's head) builds, they'll be considered part of my Stars & Stripes Forever set, along with Shooter.

Colors & Paint:

Based on the 80’s pine green dress uniform. General Flagg was always shown with sunglasses, even indoors, which I find stupid. So I went halfway and painted these as grey instead of black. I usually go with colors like sky blue or pink to “stand in” for clear lenses at the 1:18 scale.

Sculpting & Modifying:

The sides of the head were ground down to look more like a “high and tight” haircut, with ears then sculpted on. The glasses are sculpted onto the head.

The Bruce Wayne figure was chopped above the belt line. The Commissioner Gordon upper half was glued and blended into place, with the jacket components sculpted on top of that.

The biceps and shins were but cut and extended, with epoxy filling the gaps.

Thanks for looking.

Using the Xamot head was fun. Having used a Tomax for the Flash in my custom the Stars & Stripes Forever set, it felt right to use a Xamot head.

Instead of using black hair, black glasses, and black glasses, a lighter blue grey is used for the glasses and darker blue grey for their lenses. This keeps the eyebrows separated from the glasses, preventing a mess.
Back
A real jacket would likely have a slit or overlapped panels towards the back, as many suit jackets do. I didn't think about that until this figure was finished.
Front
I used a different approach for the paper sculpting done to make the lapels and pockets here than I did for General Austin. Each one is drawn by eye indecently, to try and make them look more lifelike, how each piece would distort just a bit depending on the movement of the wearer. However, this didn't really work. Also, the lapels are much too large. On the good side, the front of the jacket looks better on this figure than it does on General Austin.
Two generals
The different legs help give each figure be their own characters. Austin is older, stockier, and average height. Flagg is younger, lankier, and tall.

Eventually, I'll be adding a Colonel Abernathy (Hawk) to this set-within-a-set, wearing his dress uniform. I'll take a slower, more methodical approach to the lapels and pockets and see if I can't improve them.
