The Ferengi were unknown to the Federation until first contacted by the U.S.S. Enterprise in 2364. Their culture is based on ruthless capitalism, and guided by a set of principles known as the Rules of Acquisition. The Ferengi Commerce Authority, which enforces these Rules, is based on their home planet of Ferenginar. Devout Ferengi believe that if they live their lives according to the Rules, when they die they will go to the Divine Treasury.

Ferengi commerce policies are determined by the Grand Nagus, who controls the allocation of territories and commercial opportunities. The current Grand Nagus, Zek, has held the position for many years and is extremely powerful.

Ferengi have very sensitive ear lobes. The fastest way to a Ferengi's heart is to perform oomax, a massaging of the ears.
