Benjamin Lockwood, once a dedicated member of the U.S. Army Special Forces and later the CIA, became disillusioned with his government after a failed rescue mission in Iran, where he was left to escape alone while his comrades were captured or killed. This traumatic experience led him to join a paramilitary group known as the Sons of Liberty, who equipped him to become Agent Liberty. Initially, Lockwood used his skills to support the Sons' agenda of overthrowing the government, bringing him into conflict with Superman.
As time passed, Lockwood's faith in the Sons diminished as their methods grew increasingly violent. His turning point came when they ordered him to assassinate politician Pete Ross, a loose end related to the capture of the Sons' founder, Charles Holcraft. Refusing to comply, Lockwood turned against the group, eliminating key members and leaking critical information to reporter Clark Kent.
Lockwood temporarily abandoned his Agent Liberty identity, burning his costume in disgust after discovering that his persona inspired a misguided version of the Sons. However, he returned to the role during significant crises, including a gathering of heroes to honor fallen comrades and defend Metropolis from the Secret Society of Super-Villains.
Eventually, Lockwood was tasked by the federal government to monitor newly arrived Kryptonians. In this endeavor, he investigated their ties to Lex Luthor and General Sam Lane, which ultimately led to his demise at the hands of Superwoman, who killed him for his surveillance. His body was later discovered in Metropolis Harbor, and an investigation into his murder revealed a distress signal sent from his armor just before his death. Despite the efforts of Metropolis Metacrimes Inspector Mike Henderson, the case took a dramatic turn when Lucy Lane secretly removed Lockwood's body from the hospital, complicating the investigation further.
Lockwood's journey from a soldier to a disillusioned operative and ultimately a tragic victim illustrates the complexities of loyalty, corruption, and the consequences of one's choices in a world filled with heroes and villains.
