Bruce Banner was one of the scientists working on a Gamma bomb. When Bruce saw young Rick Jones in the place of the bombing, he ran to save him. Even though he managed to throw rick to a nearby trench, Bruce himself was irradiated by the bomb's Gamma radiation and became the Hulk.
