Dr. Leonard McCoy had retired after finishing the famous five-year mission of the U.S.S. Enterprise. However, in 2271 a mysterious alien spacecraft surrounded by a strange cloud that was 82 AU wide, entered Federation territory. This threat, called V'GER, quickly began to head towards Earth. V'GER was a gigantic proto-conscious device that used the Voyager VI space probe of the twentieth century into its operation. V'GER developed glitches by accident in its programming that made it a great danger to Earth. Admiral Kirk was chosen to lead an expedition against V'GER, and naturally advocate the recruitment of his old fried, Dr. McCoy, the Chief Medical Officer. Kirk consulted Dr. McCoy frequently during the V'GER incident. The Enterprise successfully intercepted the craft and resolved the crisis.
