On Stardate 3045.6, the U.S.S. Enterprise under the command of Captain James Kirk came under attack while visiting an Earth observation outpost on Cestus III. The landing party found the outpost destroyed by an unknown alien race. Kirk ordered the Enterprise to pursue. As the two ships passed an uncharted solar system, the Enterprise was scanned. Both vessels were stopped. Advance beings called the Metrons kidnapped Kirk and the alien captain to an unknown planet, where the dispute would be settled by personal combat. The victor's ship could go on its way, while the loser's ship would be destroyed. As Kirk fought, he learned that the alien was called a Gorn. The outpost had been built in their space. Although Kirk defeated the Gorn, he spared the alien's life. The Metrons let both ships go on their way, and promised to contact the Federation in another 1,000 years.
