On Stardate 50893.5, the Borg began a new invasion of the Federation, targeting Earth for assimilation. When Captain Picard and the crew of the newly commissioned U.S.S. Enterprise NCC-1701-E arrived just in time to save Earth, an escape pod launched from the Borg cube and created a temporal vortex. The Borg traveled back in time to the Earth year 2063, attempting to stop the creation of the Federation by destroying the first warp ship, Zefram Cochrane's Phoenix. Leading the Collective was a Borg Queen who brought order to the chaos of the hive. After the pod was destroyed, she established the collective in the Engineering room of the Enterprise. The Queen captured Data in an attempt to get the ship's access codes. When Picard came to rescue Data, the android punctured one of the plasma coolant tanks, liquefying her organic components and rendering her inactive.
